Working under the general supervision of an IC project team lead, the 3D Artist will support innovation, interdisciplinary knowledge sharing and visualization of information at Case Western Reserve through a newly established campus-wide institute called the Interactive Commons (IC). The 3D Artist will provide visual design support to faculty, staff, and students to apply cutting-edge visualization technology to achieve research and learning goals, including the use of the Microsoft HoloLens (for which Case Western Reserve has been selected as the primary medical education developer), as well as the Microsoft Surface Hub, a visualization wall, a motion capture system, and other modalities.

Key responsibilities will include interfacing with internal teaching and research faculty and student constituencies, as well as external corporate and nonprofit partners to understand project objectives and to work collaboratively with IC team members (computer developers, curriculum designers, other artists and designers), to provide hands-on design and development of 2D and 3D digital visual assets. Creative work will be heavily concentrated in developing original 3D holographic models for Microsoft HoloLens to support projects across the university and with external partners. The IC Visual Artist will also apply digital drawing/painting tools to enhance purchased digital assets, images derived from medical imaging data, or visual data from 3D motion capture technologies. The position may also support creation of 2D and 3D digital user interfaces, graphic assets, digital dashboards, data visualization and interactive presentation materials.


  1. Produce high quality 2D and 3D models that apply strong design principles to create accurate graphic displays that enhance understanding, including collaborating in the conceptualization and design of high impact visual assets in support of IC research and learning objectives. (60%)
  2. Coordinate and integrate assigned work with other team members. (10%)
  3. Manage projects to specified time constraints. (10%)
  4. Participate in analyzing, troubleshooting, and resolving complex problems related to visualization production. (5%)
  5. Provide creative direction to support effective programing and user experiences for augmented reality applications, simulations, 2D displays, and other visualizations. (5%)
  6. Interface with Microsoft collaborators, other internal and external constituents, and vendors to optimize interaction with holograms and other visualizations. (5%)


  1. Provide mentorship to students and student workers within the IC. (3%)
  2. Establish and refine effective and consistent protocols for 2D and 3D design. (2%)

Department: Continuous contact with IC director, executive director, technical, and design personnel to coordinate projects and meet objectives.

University: Frequent contact with faculty, research staff, postdocs, and students engaged in research and teaching that use, or have the potential to use, visualization resources.

External: Moderate contact with external partners to develop visualization resources. Occasional contact with vendors in order to evaluate products and services.

Students:  Frequent contact with students.


May supervise student employees.


Experience: Some related field experience preferred.

Education/Licensing: Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in design or related field required.

  9. Experience in biomedical illustration desired but not required.
  10. Experience with Unity and C# (“C Sharp”) programming language and experience in 3D modeling software such as Maya, 3D Studio or Blender (or similar) desired, but not required. 
  11. Skill and experience in the integration of technology with learning desired, but not required.
  12. Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  13. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.


Working conditions are typical of an office environment and computer rooms. Some heavy lifting up to 49 pounds may be required. Some travel may be required.
